Why Friendship Is So Great

I am very fortunate to have magnificent friends so I have experience with why friendship is so great. In this article I will share my list of reasons why friendships can be one of the most important relationships we experience.

1. Friends listen with their hearts as well as with their ears. Rather than just hearing the words we say, our friends hear and respond to the underlying emotional tone of what we say.

2. Friends take us in. They remember what is important to us and follow up when we get together to talk. They know when we are concerned or happy and the joys and challenges we experience in different phases of our lives.

3. Friends remember our favorite tea and our favorite color (which comes in handy when buying gifts) and make us feel special. I was at a bead shop recently and heard three women talking. One of the women pointed out a lovely red pendant to her friend and said, “Oh look at this, I think it is something that you would like.”

4. Friends get who we are. They understand why we react negatively to certain situations and people as well as what we love and value. After spending time with friends they understand us more deeply. They know about our backgrounds, our perspectives and responses and can let us know when we are being overly sensitive or when we could be more assertive.

5. Friends know when and how to offer help whether it be financial, emotional or physical. One of my friends helps me in all of these ways. She has an amazing quality of offering just what is needed and whatever she offers comes from her heart.

Tips For Building Good Friendships

Friendships are one of the most precious gifts. Our friends are often closer to us than (some of) our family members. Friendships deserve mindful attention. Here are some tips for building close friendships:

1. Be thoughtful of your friends and let them know you are thinking about them even when you are not actually spending time together.

2. Remember what your friends tell you about what is important to them – for instance the names of their children and grandchildren, things they confide in you, and the values they hold dear.

3. Keep in touch with friends who are close by as well as friends who live far away. Email and Skype make it easy to stay in contact and then, of course, there are cards to send in the post.

4. Friendships are based on trust. When something is told to us in confidence, and we honor that, we show that we are trustworthy.

5. Do not be afraid of being vulnerable – it builds intimacy.

6. Listen actively and carefully and do not feel you have to fix anything – listening is the important thing.

7. Accept your friends for who they are, with all their shortcomings as well as their positive qualities.

8. Give gifts and send cards for no reason at all.

9. Show your affection to your friends in ways they appreciate receiving it.

10. When talking with friends, let them know you are paying attention by remembering things they have told you about in the past.

11. When your friends are blue or feeling ill or are having a difficult time, let them know you are available to them.

12. Allow your friends to think and feel differently about things – we do not always have to agree.
